Stowlawn Primary School library design case study

October 5th 2021

Stowlawn Primary school is a mainstream school in Bilston, Wolverhampton, who are currently expanding to a 2 form entry. They have 350 pupils on roll, with a high percentage of pupil premium children (48%).

The school didn't have a library that was accessible to their children, there was no previous shelving and the space was empty and of an unusual shape. They contacted our library designers to come out for a design visit, where they discussed what they wanted to achieve with the library. Their vision was to create an area where their children could experience books and develop a love of reading and by having a library facility, they wanted to show the children that there is a world of books waiting for them to read.

Stowlawn wanted children to have time access their new library during school hours, and enable teachers to utilise the space to support their teaching as well as having time to take children out of class to enjoy reading. The new library would hold extra curricular groups, such as book groups, lunchtime reading, school newspaper as well as being a lending library so that their children have more opportunities to take books home to experience and enjoy.

Our library designer captured what the school had asked for and added features to make the library stand out whilst keeping it open, light and with neutral colours to tie in with the rest of the school design. The school loved the design so much that they came back to our designer to transform another section into a smaller cosy area matching the rest of the design.

The children and staff at Stowlawn have been so excited by the new library facility and have been eager to start borrowing books. They have extra curricular activities planned from the library as well as a timetable for staff to book a slot for their class to come and enjoy the books, or research their topic using their non-fiction section!

Hayley Sharma commented: “The library is an amazing fit into our school and our children are so excited to get in there and use the amazing facilities. There has been such a buzz around school every time children walk past the library with lots of gasps and excited comments. Thank you for making our thoughts into a reality!
