The specialist children's library supplier
For over 30 years, Peters has been the UK’s leading specialist supplier of children’s books to public libraries and school library services. We offer a comprehensive range of services to meet the requirements of a modern, vibrant library service.
Our qualified children’s librarians and curriculum specialists have a wealth of knowledge and practical experience that they bring to bear in their selections and work to support stock selection for customers. The librarians read and review all new mainstream UK children’s and teenage titles for all categories of stock and these reviews are available for customers on our websites. This allows stock selectors to choose books for their libraries with complete confidence, ensuring the best experience for the library users and the best use of book-funds.
Our website, Petranet, is not only a resource for purchasing books, it also contains detailed information on children’s and teenage publishing. There is a wide range of targeted lists designed to support quick and easy buying for book awards, stock revision back buying, national reading campaigns and initiatives and annually celebrated days.
Our book showroom has the largest and widest-ranging specialist children’s stock holding in the UK. Visits to the showroom can be invaluable when stocking a new library or when refreshing existing stocks. All authorities are welcome, regardless of whether you're a contracted customer.

Our bib. data is available free of charge to all customers.|

Our team of children’s librarians is experienced in the selection of books for local authorities throughout the UK. We provide a flexible selection service, ranging from a fully-managed service where one of our librarians will manage your budget and select titles, to an automated service based on standing orders for nominated authors and series. Our librarians will supply a list of authors and series annually to aid selection for the standing orders.
We work closely with each local authority to develop and maintain their supplier selection specification and requirements. Our librarians manage your service set-up, providing guide specifications and actively offering advice on the range, scope and content of the specification following discussions with you. We understand that selection requirements differ, so we work with each customer to tailor their specification document to meet individual authority needs. We offer:
- Pre-publication selection of new titles on a regular basis
- Selection of multiple copies of popular and bestselling titles
- One-off selection to a specific theme or budget
- Selection on a standing order basis (e.g. early readers)
- Mixed category supplier selections for special collections (e.g. playgroups)
- One-off stock back-buys – selecting titles outside of regular agreed profiles
- Stocking selection for new library sites
- Supplier selected lists available for library staff to review before order is place
Peters provides reader development support for library customers, including stock supply to support campaigns developed by publishers and literacy agencies, such as titles nominated for book awards and titles for events such as World Book Day, National Poetry Day, EmpathyLab and Children’s Book Week.
We work with publishers to provide promotional items, including character standees, illustrations, bookmarks, posters, postcards and even character costumes. These are distributed to contracted library customers via competitions and free prize draws, as well as being available in our book showroom for visitors to take away. Promotional materials can also be requested for specific library events being held within individual authorities.
We send out a monthly e-newsletter to customers containing the latest library and publishing news, new titles and bestsellers.
Our dedicated team of customer services staff provide front line support to library customers. Where customers have supplier selection their dedicated selector is a key point of contact and can be approached about all aspects of our service.
Contract management is undertaken by our Managing Director, Ray Dyer. Ray will attend review meetings either in person or via video conferencing to ensure the highest level of support for our library customers.
