Celebrate Charles III's Coronation with these classroom activities
April 24th 2023
Zeena Ark | Curriculum Specialist
Zeena was a junior school teacher for 34 years before joining Peters. She has also tried a variety of other jobs including nannying, ICT, financial consultancy, and even managing a diet clinic on Harley Street, but teaching was the only thing to give her real job satisfaction. She joined the Peters team in early 2019 and is having lots of fun reading picture books!
King Charles III's Coronation is an important event to discuss and explore with your pupils, as it will be the first coronation they (and most likely you!) will witness. In this blog, Schools Team member and qualified teacher Zeena suggests a wide range of classroom activities across curriculum subjects to commemorate the Coronation – also available as a free downloadable resourcet
What are the benefits of pupils engaging with the Coronation?
Recognising that you are living through a significant moment in history offers up reflection and fresh perspective. "The Coronation of King Charles III and The Queen Consort is an important moment in history," Zeena says. "The event offers a variety of memorable and exciting activities that children can explore and enjoy, in order to bring the event into context." By discussing and exploring the Coronation in the classroom, you can bring the event into a wider context of British history and culture, and help your pupils see the link between the past, and what's happening now.
History, Geography, and Religious Education activities
"With these activities, there are plenty of opportunities to develop a number of cross-curricular skills," Zeena explains. "Chronological understanding; using simple organisational devices like headings and sub-headings in non-narrative writing; and debating issues of religious significance with reference to experience, evidence, and argument, are some examples of the skills pupils can develop through these different activities."
Research the key rituals, emblems and symbols used at a British coronation, such as the orb and sceptre. What do they represent?
Watch videos of Elizabeth II's Coronation and compare and contrast with King Charles III's. What will be the same? What will be different?
Look at a map of London and plot the journey King Charles III will make to his Coronation and indicate important landmarks.
Write a biography of Charles III. This could be written as a fact file, or a paragraphed piece.
King Charles III will join a long line of British rulers who have been crowned at Westminster Abbey, including Queen Victoria, as pictured. What other notable people have walked through its doors?
Art and Design & Technology activities
"Drawing and understanding proportion, and understanding colour and tone can be curriculum focuses for these creative activities," Zeena details. "Generating innovative ideas and drawing on research are also valuable skills across the board."
Study the clothes worn in previous coronations. Design your own outfit that you would wear to the Coronation.
Design and create a crown that you would wear for your own coronation party.
Design a new postage stamp or new coin showing Charles' Coronation.
