Developing reading for writing

Inspiring texts to build writing units around

Choosing the right texts to spark the imaginations of your pupils is vital.

Not only do the right texts provide opportunities for fostering a love of reading – a love of the language itself, the story and characters, and the shared experience – they can also be the starting point of immersive English units, providing opportunities to inspire children’s writing, or encouraging them to engage in performance pieces.

Our team have created these lists to help inspire your pupils – including picture books, non-fiction and books exploring topical themes such as climate, the cost of living and defying gender stereotypes.

Looking for something specific? Our expert team can create bespoke book lists according to your school's requirements. Get in touch at hello@peters.co.uk or by calling us on 0121 666 6646.

Using picture books to create emotive writing - KS1

Exploring illustrations in a picture book is a great way to improve pupils thinking, discussion and empathy skills, as well as being a great stimulus for writing. Using picture books as a prompt for writing can also be a great way of immersing the whole class in a shared text, as pupils of all abilities can absorb and respond to the images. These books have been specifically chosen to allow the images to do the talking and to let pupils find their own words in response. They are perfect for expanding pupil vocabulary, encouraging pupils to experiment with sentence structure and reminding children that every word they select has got to earn its place in telling the story.

Linking literacy to life through non-fiction - KS1

Non-fiction books are often a welcome relief for reluctant readers, who can dip in and enjoy as there is no beginning, middle and end. When writing too, the same children can find non-fiction easier to engage with – enjoying the focus on real life topics. These books have been specifically selected to support the different text types taught in a primary school, and to cover a wide range of topics, so there's bound to be something that appeals to your class.

Topical themes to transform writing responses

See all

See all

Pupils can be full of questions and curiosity about the world around them and the topical issues of the time. It can make sense to explore such themes through a unit of work, supported by quality texts. Understanding different perspectives on the issues through the eyes of a fictional character, or through sharing the real life accounts of those involved, can really help pupils to make sense of the world – and it can be the starting point for some inspired writing!
